This project in Manasquan, New Jersey is what that same strip of ground looks like once it's built out right.

We put in a run of custom raised beds down both sides of the yard, wrapped them in a wood post fence with a wire gate, and set a metal arch trellis tunnel over the center path connecting the two rows. Completed in the summer of 2023, it turned a tight side yard into a real working garden.

Project Overview

This layout runs long and narrow, which is exactly what a lot of New Jersey side yards look like. Raised beds line both sides of a gravel walkway, with a wood-framed fence and gate closing off the whole run to keep animals out.

The signature piece here is the arch trellis. A series of wire hoops arcs over the center path, tying the two rows of beds together into one connected space instead of two separate ones. It's built to carry vining crops like beans, peas, or cucumbers up and over the walkway, so the growing space works vertically as well as side to side.

Every bed was filled with a premium topsoil and compost blend, and the ground around the beds was finished in crushed gravel for drainage and a clean look underfoot. A wood gate with sturdy hardware gives access in from the yard.

And the fence is what keeps all of it standing come August. A garden fence built to actually keep deer and groundhogs out, not just discourage them, is the difference between a full harvest and an empty bed by midsummer.
