This project in Rumson, New Jersey is what that same lawn looks like once part of it gets put to work.

We built six custom cedar raised beds, laid them into a defined growing area within the open lawn, and added a metal trellis for anything that wants to climb. No perimeter fence on this one. Just a clean, well-organized garden set right into the yard. Completed in the spring of 2022, it's been growing ever since.

Six rectangular cedar beds sit in two rows within a defined planting area, joined by two narrower beds along one edge that double as a planting strip and a walking path. The whole growing area is set into rich, dark soil that reads as its own space against the surrounding lawn, clean lines against green grass. No fence here, since the layout and the property called for an open design instead. What carries the look is the cedar itself and the black metal trim along every bed edge.

By the time these photos were taken, the beds were already doing their job: herbs, flowers, and vegetable starts growing in, with individual plant protectors over the youngest seedlings to give them a head start.
